Galway Commuter Coalition to present to Galway City Council

Galway Commuter Coalition is set to present to the Project Development Strategic Policy Committee (SPC) of Galway City Council in late September. The Coalition is looking forward to presenting to the SPC on our proposal to implement a bus corridor on the Salmon Weir Bridge.

Following an extensive process of researching and costing the proposal, the Coalition welcomes the opportunity to present to the diverse group of City Councillors, industry experts, community leaders, and environmental champions that sit on the Project Development SPC. Effective and reliable transportation is in the best interest of all stakeholders in Galway, and the Coalition is ready to discuss all angles of the proposal

The proposal to use the Salmon Weir Bridge as a bus-only corridor between the hours of 7am-7pm is intended to offer a short-term measure that could improve bus priority and journey reliability in the city centre while being a stepping stone in the implementation of Bus Connects Galway Cross-City Link.

This scheme has great potential for immediate traffic improvements for Galway City residents. Calculations run using NTA figures have indicated that every year this corridor is in place it would save Galway people over 16 thousand hours, or 1.84 years, worth of their time. Increased reliability could also enable a mode-shift towards public transport, which our modelling has indicated could lead to a 25-30% growth in public transport usage.

The Coalition appreciates greatly the opportunity to present on this matter, and is looking forward to advancing the Salmon Weir Bus Corridor proposal as an essential step in making Galway City more sustainable, and less car-dependent.
